Temporary housing includes living in a shelter, doubled up, or recently moved into permanent housing.
Students in temporary housing grades K-6 and grades 7&8 if they have an IEP are eligible for school bus service. Students in temporary housing in 3-K and Pre-K may also be eligible for busing but only if there is an available route.
To request busing for students in Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelters, the parent should ask their caseworker to update the transportation preference in CARES.
For all other students in temporary housing, an online Exceptions Request on the SupportHub https://supporthub.schools.nyc/family-topics/Transportation/issues/I%20need%20to%20request%20an%20exception%20to%20transportation%20eligibility must be filled out, and the school must update the student’s address and housing status.
Exceptions Requests are not needed for students in DHS shelters except for students in 3-K and Pre-K. Exceptions Requests are also not needed for students with IEP-mandated busing.
Students in temporary housing who don’t receive busing or who are waiting to get busing can get student OMNY cards. Their parents can also get an OMNY card if they are taking their child (grade preschool-12) to/from school.

People who can help you apply for and arrange transportation:
At the school, there should be a Transportation Coordinator, a STH (Students in Temporary Housing) Community Coordinator, and a BTG (Bridging The Gap) Social Worker.
At the Shelter, there should be a STH Family Assistant but if not, there’s a Regional Manager. The regional manager names and districts are up to date in the chart at https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/special-situations/students-in-temporary-housing/#RegionalManager
An agency that can advise on education rights, including transportation is Advocates for Children. Jennifer Pringle is the Learners in Temporary Housing expert. If you have tried the steps above and still need help, Call 1-866-427-6033 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Thursday.
Students with a disability or medical condition sometimes qualify for yellow bus service from their housing to the school, even after grade 6.

Las viviendas temporales incluye vivir en un refugio, vivir en una vivienda doble o mudarse recientemente a una vivienda permanente.
Los estudiantes en los grados K-6 de vivienda temporal, y los grados 7 y 8 si tienen un IEP, son elegibles para el servicio de autobús escolar. Los estudiantes en vivienda temporal en 3-K y Pre-K también pueden ser elegibles para el autobús, pero solo si hay una ruta disponible.
