TRANSPORTATION TO SCHOOL from temporary housing or shelter

Families can request school bus service for students in temporary housing who are in grades pre-kindergarten to 6. This includes living in a shelter, doubled up, or recently moved into permanent housing. The form to fill out is called Request for Exception to Transportation Rules and Eligibility.

A free MetroCard is available for the mother or father to accompany their children between school and temporary housing on public transportation. First ask the school’s “S.T.H. Liaison” and then if the shelter has a “STH Family Assistant”, that person might offer a metrocard that lasts longer than the one from school. If schools need to order more parent MetroCards they should email: publicschoolmetrocards@schools.nyc.gov

People who can help you apply for and arrange transportation:
At the school, there should be a Transportation Coordinator, a STH (Students in Temporary Housing) Community Coordinator, and a BTG (Bridging The Gap) Social Worker.
At the Shelter, there should be a STH Family Assistant but if not, there’s a Regional Manager [In District 2 and 3, this is Iris Gersten. In District 4, this is Cecilio Diaz].
An agency that can advise on education rights, including transportation is Advocates for Children. Call 1-866-427-6033 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Thursday. Jennifer Pringle is the Learners in Temporary Housing expert. They also defend the rights of Students with Disabilities, and English Language Learners.
Students with a disability or medical condition sometimes qualify for yellow bus service from their housing to the school, even after grade 6.

Federal law says If the housing changes, the student has the right to keep attending the same school.
City law says the Department of Homeless Services must try to house the family close to the youngest child’s school.

TRANSPORTE A LA ESCUELA desde alojamiento temporal o albergue
Las familias pueden solicitar el servicio de autobús escolar para los estudiantes en viviendas temporales que están en los grados de prekínder a 6to. Esto incluye vivir en un refugio, vivir en una vivienda doble o mudarse recientemente a una vivienda permanente. El formulario a llenar se llama Solicitud de excepción a las normas y los requisitos de transporte.
Una MetroCard gratuita está disponible para que la madre o el padre acompañe a sus hijos en el transporte público entre la vivienda temporal y la escuela. Primero pregunte al “S.T.H.
