@nycmayor and @doechancellor, Listen to the students of New York City

Wednesday September 7 at 11:00 AM, the youth are asking for support in 2 ways:

  1. City Hall Park rally - Show up early on either Park Row or Broadway to go through security.

Subways are 4, 5, 6 Brooklyn Bridge City Hall; J, Z Chambers St.; R, W City Hall or a longer walk east from A, C Chambers St.; 2, 3 Park Place.

  2. On social media - Post the image above [Alt Text is also provided above for Visually Impaired community]

- and tag @nycmayor and @doechancellor

PIST will be there, because we support all forms of Student Transportation justice!

Those students who are ready to ride more independently than they do on the yellow bus — or are learning to do so with Travel Training program, that has begun after 2+ years of wait lists — need access to city buses and subways during the non-school hours/days.

Later hours are also important for those taking a college course in the evening, working, attending cultural and sports events, or helping with family responsibilities. These young people are put in the position of having to wait for a stranger to swipe them in, or to risk getting in trouble with the law, if they can’t afford an extra fare.

With student metrocard extensions DOE, OPT, MTA can easily open up access to the extracurricular and community service activities that belong on college applications, and to exposure to work as mandated in transition goals on the IEP.

At this time, the DOE has said that they do not want to adjust the hours of Student MetroCards, but we are still dedicated to addressing this issue because many students like you would benefit from longer MetroCard hours. We are conducting a new survey in order to help us further advocate for extended Student MetroCard hours, and free weekend swipes. Your responses would greatly assist us in making sure these actions are implemented. Below is the survey; please complete it as soon as possible.

The 74th District Youth Council would also like to invite you to our Student MetroCard rally on September 7 at 11:00 AM, located in City Hall Park. We will be calling on elected officials to support our initiatives to expand MetroCard hours. We would appreciate you joining us and bringing friends! There is a flyer attached below with more information. We hope to see you there!
