NYC public schools have an extra 150 minutes a week called Extended Day for students who show need based on state test results (taken toward the end of each grade 3 to 8) and/or principal discretion.

Normal pick-up time is 7:10 AM, bus arrives at 7:40 AM. Driver informs me that there are "inspections" all over town, some buses are "one hour late". Today was a half day at school. At around noon, a friend, and parent of our child's classmate calls and informs us that our child is stranded outside the school with no sign of the bus. For the first 2 weeks of school in the 2010 school year, my child’s pick up time was 8:40. School starts at 8:20. With an approximate travel time of one hour, my child was routinely 90 minutes late to school.

My child came off the standard bus crying with a big red mark across their cheek. In Dec 2009, two hats were stolen from my child on the bus. My child told me who had done it, and when I informed OPT (2 complaints and called the school), I was told that the they were looking into the incident. I have yet to hear back.

When my child was switched to standard size bus, he immediately started coming home saying that he was being picked on and called names. I complained to principal and OPT and was told to tell the matron to switch his seat.
